On 22 April people from throughout the Kabarole and Kamwenge Districts came together to celebrate Earth Day for the first time in Uganda. With over 1,500 people in attendance, the event was a smashing success. The celebration was coordinated and sponsored by KFCCE members, by the Kibale Association for Rural and Environmental Development (KAFRED), and by the Uganda-North Carolina International Teaching for the Environment (UNITE) Program. Fellow coalition members, the Kibale Fuel Wood Project, Uganda Wildlife Authority, and Tooro Botanical Gardens participated in the event, while schools from the Kasiisi Project attended (see the blog). The guest of honor at the celebration was Professor Edward Rugamayo of Tooro Botanical Gardens.
Guests were able to explore the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary free of charge, watch nature movies, play environmental games and view locally made handicrafts and food items. The celebration also featured performances by two local dance and drama groups, eight UNITE schools, and one Bigodi school. Demonstrations were given on the following:
-- Cooking with a solar oven
-- Using wind energy to create energy
-- Fuel efficient stove cooking and building
UNITE and KAFRED are proud to announce that over 75% of the funding for the event was raised locally by UNITE teachers and KAFRED staff! Thank you to everyone for your support, we are already looking forward to next year's celebration!
